Earning the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s top award is no easy task, but Hyundai manages to do it year after year. Newly refreshed for this model year, the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe earned top crash test scores in every category from the IIHS. Not only that, the Santa Fe also earned a top overall score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Santa Fe’s improved score comes from a stronger occupant compartment that led to a “good” score in the small overlap front crash test. Up from the 2016 model’s “marginal” rating, the resulting score combined with the optional front crash prevention system gave the SUV the “Top Safety Pick+” award.
“Prior to the changes, the midsize SUV’s structure failed to hold up in the small overlap test, which replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole,” the IIHS stated.
The NHTSA also gave the Santa Fe its top five-star safety score, putting this SUV at the top of its class. In previous years, the Subaru Outback and Nissan Murano had scored the top safety rating, giving them an advantage over the Santa Fe.
With the Santa Fe’s new score, the competition is in for a heated, quality-driven race.
